4 Reasons You Should Be Building City Centre Cottages

There has been a lot of talk in the last week on the best strategy for Monopoly City Streets, so let me begin by throwing in my 2 cents worth of Monopoly dollars.

I personally feel that there is very little strategy to this game, the turn based process eliminates a lot of strategy and restricts what is possible within the game. So you get your money once every 24 hours and within an hour it’s all gone and you’re waiting for another 24 hours, while in the mean time your competitors are sabotaging your streets and demolishing your building and you are pretty much helpless other than to look on.

So, ending my rant and back to City Centre Cottages, here are four reasons why I think you should be using them in the game.

  1. You get 100% return on investment
Assuming that you are only purchasing the one million monopoly dollar roads, which you should be, you get 100% ROI every day. Put it this way, if you have $1.5m to spend, you can buy 20 city centre cottages which earns $1.5m per day. No other building does this, you can’t earn more money for the same amount of capital.
  2. It fills up your street quicker
One way to lose the game is to have competitors place hazards on your street, ruining your chances of making money. If you fill up your streets with cheap cottages your competitors will need to get a destruction card first before placing a hazard, which increases your chances of success greatly.
  3. Competitors want to demolish expensive buildings
Think of the psychology here, you get a demolish building chance card, are you going to use it on a $75k cottage or a $2m building? Which is going to be more painful to the user? If a competitor destroys your cottage, you’ve lost out on just $75k, no big deal, very easily replaced.
  4. The more things you buy the more chance cards you get
Sabotaging your competitors is the quickest way to success. Cutting off their money supply by destroying buildings and placing hazards means they haven’t got the cash to retaliate. Buying lots of cheap buildings gives you loads of chances on each turn to buy your bonuses and sabotage your competitors.

To sum up, let the kids and wannabes buy their famous roads and build big white elephant buildings. If you really want to excel at this game, do the wise thing, buy those $1m dollar roads and fill ‘em up with city centre cottages!
